Good to Know About Endurance Mountain Biking

Elmwood Park Short Track Race - Roanoke, VA

Whether you’re a longtime fan of the sport, wanting to show your support for Roanoke’s outdoor community, or just here for a good time; we’ve created a guide with everything you need to know to enjoy the action.

The Three Disciplines

Cross-Country Marathon (XCM)
This is the longest, most grueling format of the week. Riders tackle 40+ miles of rugged backcountry trails, racing for multiple hours over steep climbs and rocky singletrack. It’s all about endurance, pacing, and managing technical terrain deep in the woods.

Carvins Cove is the Marathon venue, and it’s renowned for offering miles and miles of the best of Roanoke’s single-track riding.

Short Track (XCC)
Fast, furious, and fan-friendly, short track racing happens on a compact 1–2km loop. Racers go full gas for about 20 minutes, and it’s nonstop action—perfect for spectators who want to be close to the chaos.

Elmwood Park is the Short Track venue, making this the first time a short track championship has taken place in a downtown core with urban features.

Cross-Country Olympic (XCO)
This is the marquee format you’ve seen in the Olympics: a ~90-minute race on a 4–5km loop with sharp climbs, drops, and switchbacks. Riders lap through the spectator zone multiple times, giving you front-row views of the world-class skill and speed.

Explore Park is the Cross Country venue, and it’s the top spot for adventurous rides.

Who’s Who

Check out the race schedule to see which category is racing when. Every category is exciting and worthy of your time. Though, if you are rooting for the home team (so to speak), these are just a few of the Roanokers to watch:

  • Kerry Werner, pro racer with a shockingly long list of cyclocross wins and a vlog that shreds. Check out Kerry’s course previews for each discipline: Marathon, Short Track, Cross Country
  • Abigail Snyder, pro racer who just won the 2025 Rockstar Grand Depart (270 mile race from Harrisonburg to Roanoke) AND set the record for the women’s fastest known time (FKT).
  • Emily Shields, 3-time national champion in cyclocross and short track
  • Gordon Wadsworth, 8-time national mountain bike champion and Technical Director for the USA Cycling Endurance Mountain Bike Championships. If it’s not enough just bringing this hometown championship to life, he’ll be competing as well.

We're also looking forward to welcoming some incredibly decorated national team members and Paris 2024 Olympians, who will be participating in various races throughout the week.

  • Riley Amos: Paris 2024 Olympian & member of the U23 U.S. Men's National Team
  • Savilia Blunk: Paris 2024 Olympian & member of the U.S. Elite Women's National Team
  • Madigan (Maddie) Munro: Member of the U23 U.S. Women's National Team

Pro Tips for Spectators

  • Bring a chair, water bottle, cowbell, and snacks (though vendors will be onsite).
  • Download Trail Maps for Carvins Cove and Explore Park if you want to explore the trails between races.
  • Pack for the weather: It’s July in Virginia—expect sun, heat, and the occasional pop-up storm.
  • Don’t block the course: Stay behind tape lines and listen to marshals—it’s for your safety and the riders’.
  • Connect with Locals: Cardinal Bicycle will have a Cheer Zone at Elmwood Park for the short track races and a lounge at Explore Park for the cross country Olympic races.
