No visit to “The Star City” is complete without a visit to the iconic Roanoke Star, located atop Mill Mountain. Originally constructed in 1949 as a Christmas decoration, the 88.5 foot star sits atop the mountain and is illuminated nightly, beaming as a unique beacon for the city.
The overlook at the base of the Star provides an incredible view of Downtown Roanoke and the surrounding valley, as well as a great spot to get your own Star selfie!
While you’re on Mill Mountain, make some time for a visit to the Mill Mountain Zoo, take a walk through the wildflower garden, learn more about the area at the Discovery Center, or check out the great network of trails for hiking & mountain biking.
You’ll also find fun things to do in other sections of the City of Roanoke, including the walkable Downtown Roanoke, the charming Grandin Village, as well as the up-and-coming Wasena Neighborhood. And everything is easily reachable via the network of Roanoke Valley Greenways!
