National D-Day Memorial - Bedford
If you're interested in learning about the history of Virginia's Blue Ridge, you should absolutely visit the National D-Day Memorial. This sacred site is located in Bedford, about 30 miles from Roanoke, and holds much importance to the community and our country. Tragically, the town suffered the highest per capita D-Day loss of life of any community in the country. Here, we honor the soldiers who were part of the D-Day invasion.
The memorial is centered around a beautiful plaza featuring an arc and a reflecting pool. As you walk through, you'll find a variety of statues and exhibits paying tribute to this monumental period in military history. You can even take a guided tour, if you prefer, for a more educational and in-depth experience.
New Freedom Farm - Botetourt County
Have you heard of equine therapy? It's based on the idea that bonding with horses can benefit your mental health. New Freedom Farm in Botetourt County offers this service to veterans by running programs where they can learn to groom, feed, and lead the horses to cope with psychological conditions like PTSD.
You'll have to visit for yourself to see just how impactful the bond between humans and animals can be. You can even participate in equine therapy sessions and may get the chance to participate in hands-on learning activities with the horses.
High Ground Veterans Monument - Vinton
The High Ground Vinton-Roanoke County Veterans Monument is located on the grounds of the Vinton War Memorial and is open to the public. This site recognizes fallen soldiers from many military branches and features a peaceful display of plaques and sculptures. You'll even see tributes to some local veterans here, so be sure to stop by and pay your respects.

Audie Murphy Memorial - Appalachian Trail
Actor and soldier Audie Murphy is forever remembered in Virginia's Blue Ridge with a special memorial located along the Appalachian Trail. This site is uniquely established in the exact location where Murphy's plane crashed in 1971. You'll find a memorial plaque and American flags decorating the area, and visitors are asked to treat the area appropriately and respectfully.
This is a monument you shouldn't pass up if you want to learn more about a former American whose exemplary bravery earned him a Medal of Honor and legendary status in our country's history.
