Follow the Andy Layne Trail to make the challenging, rewarding climb to Tinker Cliffs, located on Tinker Mountain on the Appalachian Trail. This out-and-back hike is over 7.5 miles and features nearly 2,000 feet in elevation change. With the mountain's elevation of 3,000 feet, Tinker Cliffs offers a striking view of the ridgeline as you face south toward the Roanoke Valley. It's one of three segments, along with Dragon's Tooth and McAfee Knob, that make up the Triple Crown. The Andy Layne Trail begins at the parking lot off Catawba Road/Route 779. From the parking lot, hike just over 3 miles on the Andy Layne Trail before turning right on the Appalachian Trail (southbound) and continuing approximately .75 miles to reach Tinker Cliffs.
