Built in 1912 to serve freight trains on the twisting "Punkin' Vine" route between Roanoke and Rocky Mount, the freight depot was restored as part of the Downtown Revitalization project in 1999. It has since served as headquarters for the Community Partnership for Economic Development and the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, and is now operated as a welcome center by part-time town employees. The welcome center is open from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday from Easter through Christmas, and is available for rent for private parties and events on a per-hour basis. The welcome center provides a wealth of information on local attractions, lodging, restaurants and events. Our knowledgeable, welcoming staff will get you around Rocky Mount, down the Crooked Road to the Harvester, along local arts, wine and craft beer trails, or to any other regional destination. Brochures, travel guides and flyers provide visitors with information. Soft drinks, town souvenirs and Crooked Road merchandise are available for purchase, and our host staff often has fresh cookies right from the oven in the Depot kitchen.
