Bagpiper Burt Mitchell grew up in piping family in Wilmington, Delaware, where he learned to play the pipes from his father, Robert Gilchrist and Roderick MacDonald. He became one of the top players in America having won the award for the Eastern US’s Best Open Piper for year while still in his teens. He has won the same award twice since. Having taught bagpipes since he was 15 years old, teaching is extremely important to Mitchell since it helps to perpetuate an ancient art into future generations. He has instructed various pipe bands and has created a unique methodology for instruction of the bagpipe called “Pipe Teacher’s Assistant”. This popular book and CD series is equally respected in Scotland as well as the US as a teaching tool. He is currently the Piping Instructor at the Virginia Military Institute where he has developed a US Military Pipe Band system of instruction, repertoire and arrangements. About fifteen years ago, the penny whistle, Irish flute and Uilleann pipes became new passions for Mitchell. Now, the popular New York-based Celtic rock band, Ceili Rain uses Mitchell’s unique talents to flavor their own music. He also has a solo piping CD called “Pipes Alive” demonstrating his innovative piping style from moving Slow Aires to lively dance tunes.
