Roanoke Outdoor Adventures

Outdoor Adventures

The majestic mountains that surround the Roanoke Valley provide a scenic backdrop for everyday life here. But to fully enjoy your Blue Ridge Mountains experience you've got to put on some sturdy shoes and hike, bike, climb, paddle, or drive among them. Bring your favorite energy bar. You're going to need it with all the outdoor adventures you'll find here.

If hiking or trail running is your thing, you may never want to leave. There are hundreds of miles of trails and greenways in the region, including the most famous hiking trail in America - the Appalachian Trail.

If you'd prefer to see the sites on two wheels instead of by foot, the mountain biking and road cycling in the Roanoke Valley are second to none. With more than 40 miles of trails and an 800-acre reservoir, Carvins Cove is the second largest municipal park in the nation and a mountain biking paradise. Cyclists from around the world travel to Virginia to cruise the famous Blue Ridge Parkway and the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail.

Cool off with some watersports while you're here. Get a new perspective on the mountains as you meander through them while paddling and fishing on the Upper James River Water Trail. Great fishing and boating, not to mention waterskiing and sailing awaits on other rivers and lakes in the Roanoke Valley as well, including trophy bass at Smith Mountain Lake.
