The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1953, is the largest professional orchestra in western Virginia. Under the leadership of David Stewart Wiley, Musical Director and Conductor, the RSO offers a subscription season of 11 concerts including 5 Classics, 3 Virtuosi (chamber orchestra) and 3 Pops concerts. A number of these concerts feature the Roanoke Symphony Chorus with the Orchestra. Two Holiday Pops performances and special presentations by the Tallis Scholars and Leon Bates in December round out the season`s offerings. The Roanoke Symphony also plays a series of "run-out" performances throughout the region. The RSO`s education program includes concerts for elementary and middle school students. The RSO sponsors a youth symphony, a junior strings training orchestra and a youth harp ensemble.
