Virginia's Blue Ridge is hosting the 2023 USA Cycling Amateur Road National Championships from June 14 through June 17. Various cycling events will be taking place in Roanoke County, the City of Roanoke and Franklin County and we're excited to welcome the top amateur cyclists from around the country to our region for this exciting event.
Local residents should expect an increase in cycling activities leading up to the event as participants practice the courses, as well as road closures and impacts during the championships.
The following is a list of areas that will be impacted.
Time Trial – Base of Operations – Explore Park, Roanoke County
We are pleased to partner with Roanoke County to host the time trial event at Explore Park. The course will be run on a closed portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Spectators are encouraged to attend this years’ time trial race as the staging area will be on the beautiful Roanoke River Parkway between the Blue Ridge Parkway and Explore Park. The Blue Ridge Parkway will be closed, event access will be from Rutrough Road in Roanoke. The Roanoke River Parkway will be closed to non-event traffic. The Blue Ridge Parkway will be closed from Rt 460 to Rt 220 with detours in place. Event traffic will utilize Rutrough Road. Residents should expect increased cyclist activity in the area in the weeks leading up to the time trial race.
Road Race – Base of Operations – Waid Park, Franklin County
We are pleased to partner with Franklin County to host the Road Races for 2023. Fans are encouraged to join us to catch the action live and cheer on the athletes at the start/finish line of the 2023 USA Cycling Road Amateur National Championships. Access to Waid Park will be available from Pepper Road. Races from 7am – 7:30pm - Increased event traffic on 6 Mile Post Road, Pepper Road and Waid Park Road. Full closure of 6 Mile Post Road from Pepper Road to Calico Rock Road and Waid Park Road from Pepper Road to 6 Mile Post Road. There will be temporary traffic stoppage as the race “package” rolls through the race course with police and emergency vehicles providing direction to motorists and rider support. Residents should plan an additional 30 minutes of travel times through the area. However, traffic stoppages are only expected to last 5-10 minutes at a time throughout each day of racing.
Criterium – Downtown Roanoke
We are pleased to partner with the City of Roanoke to host the Road Races for 2023. Fans are encouraged to join us to catch the action live and cheer on the athletes at the start/finish line of the 2023 USA Cycling Road Amateur National Championships.
Criterium – Base of Operations – Straight Street on Luck Ave, Downtown Roanoke
Roads impacted with street closures: Luck Ave, 2nd, 3rd,, 4th, 5th, Day, and Franklin.
First race at 8:00am. Last race ends at 7:15pm
Note – Road closures from 4am – 7:30pm (reopening all roads by 8:30pm)
