2022 USA Cycling Amateur Road National Championships

June 29 - July 2 | Virginia's Blue Ridge

Visit Virginia’s Blue Ridge, the County of Botetourt and the City of Roanoke, are thrilled to be the host communities for this national cycling championship. Junior and amateur athletes and their families will be traveling to the area from all over the United States to compete in these races.

**Residents should expect an increase in cyclist activities leading up to the event as junior athletes and their families travel to the area to practice the courses.

Tuesday, June 28, 2022 

Registration and packet pick-up day
Anticipated ~ 750  Junior and Amateur Athletes including VBR TWENTY24 female cyclists
Location – Roanoke City Market building 
Time - 3pm to 6pm 
Impacts: expect higher than normal traffic in the downtown area

Wednesday, June 29, 2022

Time Trial Race - a test of an individual cyclist’s speed over a set distance.
Base of Operations – Troutville Elementary School 
Time: 4am to 3:30pm
Road impacts: Stoney Battery Road will be closed at Route 11, residents only on Stoney Battery Road – No thru traffic. Route 11 Northbound lanes impacted to Hardbarger Road from 4am – 3:30pm Residents along the race course will be assisted by Botetourt County Sheriff, Virginia State Police and Course Marshals.
Spectators and fans are not encouraged to attend this day’s event. There are no safe viewing areas along the course on Route 11 or at the start/finish gate on Route 11 at Stoney Battery Road.

Thursday, June 30, 2022 and Friday July 1 

Road Race – is a cycling race where participants start as a group at the same time and cover the same distance. Athletes will not compete on both days, there are many categories that need to complete this event
Base of Operations – Botetourt Sports Complex
Time - 6:30am – 7:15pm
Free
Roads impacts: Etzler Road, Catawba Road, Haymakertown road, Breckinridge Mill Road, Lees Gap Road, Grove Hill Road, Blacksburg Road.  
Note – No road closures – rolling competition with group and police escort, this means that roads will be open to traffic before the riders pass and after the racers have traveled through an area. (Think presidential motorcade.)
Fans are encouraged to join us to catch the action live and cheer on the athletes at the start finish line of the 2022 USA Cycling Road Amateur National Championships. Access the Botetourt Sports Complex from Etzler Road, parking available off of Preston Parkway.

Saturday, July 2, 2022

Criterium – A criterium or “crit” is a lapped bicycle race on a closed circuit set in cities.
Base of Operations – Downtown Roanoke
Time - 7:00am to 7:30pm (road closures will start at midnight and the course build will be completed by 4am)
Free
Roads impacted:  Church Avenue, 2nd, 3rd, Luck, Franklin and Jefferson. (First Street closed)
Fans are encouraged to join us to catch the action live and cheer on the athletes all along the downtown Roanoke criterium race course. Parking map >
