The ride up Mount Chestnut in Roanoke County combines the beauty of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains and the amazing setting of Valhalla Vineyards, which is located on top of the mountain. The view of the Roanoke city skyline and surrounding mountains is breathtaking. For this route, riders begin at the intersection of Mount Chestnut Road/Route 692 and Bent Mountain Road/Route 221. The ride to the summit is a little over three miles and it’s a climb of approximately 800 feet, making it one of the more gradual, moderate ascents for road biking in the region. For more riding, Mount Chestnut could also be easily combined with the ride up 12 O’Clock Knob, which is located nearby off Route 221.
