More Information

“Mavis Staples is a hit-maker, a civil rights activist, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and a true believer in her God, in this country and in the power of good over evil. If we need a voice to listen to right now—to educate us, to comfort us, to spur us into action—it’s hard to think of a better one than hers.” — Paste Magazine Grammy award winning singer and civil rights activist, Mavis Staples began singing with her family, The Staple Singers in Chicago in the 1940s, later performing in Montgomery, Alabama for none other than Martin Luther King, Jr. Lauded as one of the greatest gospel singers of all time, her powerful voice has underscored some of the United States most pivotal and dramatic periods of social change, weaving herself into the very fabric of gospel, soul, folk, pop, R&B, blues, rock, and hip hop over the last 60 years. For her most recent release, If All I Was Was Black, Staples collaborated for a third time with singersongwriter and Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy, producing music that is as fierce, important, and yearning as it ever was.
