Local Colors is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit that celebrates ethnic diversity in the Roanoke Valley through events, education and service. Founded in 1991, Local Colors has grown from a festival representing 4 countries/cultures to hosting year round events that highlight different cultures and create a welcoming place. Local Colors annual festival in May draws approximately 10,000 people to Elmwood Park to experience cuisine, performances, and displays representing over 50 cultures from around the world. Hispanic Heritage Month and Lunar New Year (in collaboration with the Taubman Museum) are also celebrated. Local Colors works with community leaders, schools, businesses, and various ethnic groups to provide education and connections. Local Colors is covered by the media in many foreign countries, awarded an Outstanding Event in SWVA by the Library of Congress, and is documented as a Local Legacy.
