Kegley Lecture: "An All American City: Progress and Architecture in Roanoke During the Mid-20th Century"

Join as in April as architectural historians, Anne Beckett and Alison Blanton, return to the Kegley Lecture Series with a talk on mid-century Roanoke.

Beckett and Blanton will present an overview of the mid-20th Century economic conditions (the boom before the bust) and their influence on Roanoke’s architecture. The talk will look at the remaining Mid-Century Modern buildings and signage (including some before and after photos) from Williamson Road to downtown Roanoke to Salem, as well as discuss certain architects such as Kinsey, Motley, and Shane Architects & Engineers and the recent award-winning restoration of their signature structure, the Colony House Motor Lodge on Franklin Road. Gain a new perspective on the Roanoke landscape and uncover the hidden architectural treasures that exist amid the area's development, appreciating the unique qualities of Mid-Century Modern architecture, which is often overlooked or misunderstood.
