Fleda A. Ring Artworks, in collaboration with Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, presents: “The Gift”, featuring new works by local artists Christopher Cobb, Brian Counihan, Dreama Kattenbraker, Mary Beth Lee, Heath Nevergold, Dave Stein and Ann Trinkle. To begin their pieces, each artist was presented with the same material: a cigar box. The resulting works are highly differentiated and unique artistic explorations. They are “boxes full” of what it means to give and receive in today’s society. In their work, our participating artists use a variety of methods and media to consider the physical and metaphorical, the personal and the social, the political and the philosophical. They interrogate the systems of imperialism, consumerism, nationalism, oppression, and their own values. They celebrate their loved ones, liberty, selflessness and progress. Finally, they ask what the “greatest gift” is, and what it means to them and their community. “The Gift” opens Friday, December 2nd , 2016 and will be on exhibition until Friday, January 27th, 2017. Fleda A. Ring Artworks encourages visitors and others to show their support for Planned Parenthood South Atlantic by making a gift of any size to their preventative, affordable, and accessible reproductive health care offered via their center in Roanoke, their comprehensive, medically accurate health education offered at schools and agencies throughout the Roanoke Valley, and their programs advocating for reproductive justice.
