A new artisan chocolate shop has opened in Downtown Roanoke in Virginia’s Blue Ridge!
Altus Chocolate describes itself as a bean-to-bar chocolate lounge with the goal of introducing guests to the artisan process and experience of craft chocolate.
Yes, you read that right. Chocolate. Lounge.
There are chocolate bars. Chocolate drinks. Chocolate truffles. Chocolate baked goods. Chocolate themed events and tastings.
It’s everything chocolate!
The products feature single origin cacao beans that are imported from various regions around the world and then roasted and used to create the delicious treats you’ll find on the menu. Signature items include the European Sipping Chocolate, Chocolate Cheesecake, fresh-baked Chocolate Chip Cookies, and hand-crafted truffles.
The company originally started four years ago as a regular vendor at the Lynchburg Community Market under the name “Cao Artisan Chocolate” and eventually grew to having its own storefront in Lynchburg.
Now, Altus Chocolate is expanding its presence in the region with this new location on Campbell Avenue in Downtown Roanoke.
The name “Altus” is derived from the Latin word meaning “high” or “lofty,” which is the standard the company strives to meet with its dedication to quality ingredients and products.
Visitors can expect to find high quality desserts and an experience where they can learn more about the details of the chocolate-making process in a casual, comfortable environment that provides the setting to relax and spend some time.
The lounge offers two stories of beautiful space with hardwood floors, comfortable chairs and plenty of room to spend an hour or two during your Blue Ridge Day in Downtown Roanoke.
The mezzanine space can also be reserved for parties and private events.
What to Order
If you’re visiting for the first time, consider trying the European Sipping Chocolate. It’s a thick, rich, hot chocolate that Store Manager Stefan Mueller describes as "a cross between fondue and hot chocolate." It’s inspired by the type of chocolate drink you’d find at a French cafe and serves as a great introduction to Altus Chocolate.
Want to find something that pairs chocolate & coffee? Order a Mocha. Altus Chocolate is partnering with Floyd-based Red Rooster Coffee for all its coffee and espresso drinks and the Mocha features the shop’s chocolate ganache that is melted down to be used in beverages.
You could also enjoy a variety of goods from the pastry case, such as the chocolate cheesecake, chocolate cupcakes, chocolate ganache cake, and bourbon salted caramel chocolate tart. Chocolate chip cookies can be purchased by the half-dozen or dozen, which are then baked to order.
The flourless chocolate torte is a fantastic gluten free option, and all the chocolate is gluten free.
Even vegans can find something tasty at Altus Chocolate with the Almond Cranberry Coconut Macaroons and all drinks can be prepared as vegan-friendly.
Will you be sharing with friends? Partake in a pot of amazing Altus Chocolate fondue!
For something a little heartier, the menu also features a cheese plate and charcuterie plate.
Remember to take some chocolate home with you to share with friends and family, like the rich assortment of chocolate truffles, cacao nibs, chocolate bars, and jars of salted caramel chocolate sauce.
Events & Tastings
You can also learn more about the art of craft chocolate by participating in special events that will be hosted at the lounge.
Altus Chocolate plans to offer chocolate tastings, as well as events focused on chocolate & coffee pairings and chocolate & wine pairings. Events will cost $7 per person to attend and you must register in advance. Be sure to follow them on Facebook at Altus Chocolate Roanoke to keep up with information about upcoming events.
