It’s time for fall fun in the Roanoke Valley in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains!

The fall colors are on their way and the calendar features many special seasonal events, including fall festivals, college football, haunted houses, ghost walks, and Halloween celebrations.

October is also Virginia Wine Month, making it the perfect time to visit our local vineyards and wineries in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

Here is a preview of some of the unique events happening this month to help you plan your next #BlueRidgeDay!

1. Virginia’s Blue Ridge Creature from Carvins Cove
Carvins Cove Boat Landing

Riders will take on the gnarly mountain biking trails at Carvins Cove in this final race of the XXC-VA series! The race will feature a course that winds through 40 miles of the grueling trails at the Cove.

2. Jeter Farm Fall Festival & Country Store

Are you ready for a Blue Ridge Day full of hay rides, petting farm animals, pumpkin picking, getting lost in the corn maze, and other family-friendly fun? The Jeter Farm Fall Festival & Country Store takes place every weekend through the entire month of October.

3. Layman Family Farms Fall Festival

Open every Saturday and Sunday through November 11, the Layman Family Farms Fall Festival features an 8-acre corn maze, jumping pillow, corn cannon, pumpkin blaster and lots more farmtastic fun activities. If you’re looking for something a little more daring, you can also check out the Haunted Harvest every Friday & Saturday night from October 6th through 28th. 

4. Little Shop of Horrors
Mill Mountain Theatre
October 4-15
Featuring the music of Alan Menken and based on the book & lyrics by Howard Ashman, Mill Mountain Theatre presents Little Shop of Horrors! It’s the perfect production to get you in the Halloween spirit as the show is part horror comedy musical and part sci-fi spoof.

5. CityWorks (X)po
Grandin CoLab
October 5-7
Thought leaders from around the country will make their way to Virginia’s Blue Ridge to take part in the annual City Works (X)po, where attendees share and collaborate on ideas that can change the world.

6. Ghost Walk: East Hill Cemetery | Sherwood Memorial Park

The Salem Museum & Historical Society will present multiple opportunities to participate in its popular Ghost Walks! There will be walks through the East Hill Cemetery October 5-7 and then additional walks through Sherwood Memorial Park October 12-14. You’ll meet characters who played a role in the region’s rich history!

7. The Meek’s Manor Haunted House

This is the time of year for haunted houses and getting scared out of your mind, which makes The Meek’s Manor the perfect place to visit! With 18 terrifying rooms, we hope you’re brave enough to make it through all of them!

8. First Fridays - The WORX

Don’t miss the final First Fridays event of the year as The WORX performs and the Fork in the Road food truck serves food for OctoberFest.

9. Ghost Walk 2017
Downtown Rocky Mount

Learn about local history and paranormal activity with this spooky, informative Ghost Walk through the Town of Rocky Mount in Franklin County.

10. Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour

Take tours of many elegant homes located on the shores of Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia’s Blue Ridge. Many feature manicured lawns, unique architecture, and beautiful waterfront views.

11. Mountain Magic in Fall Bluegrass, Antiques & Crafts Festival

More than 100 vendors will be on display at this annual festival that has been voted one of the best community events in Botetourt County. There will be a large selection of arts, crafts, delicious food, and live bluegrass music.

12. The Great Pumpkin Smash

An entire festival dedicated to pumpkins? Dr Pepper Park at The Bridges is your spot for The Great Pumpkin Smash, which will feature a variety of pumpkin brews, pumpkin foods, pumpkin carving, pumpkin smashing, and more.

13. 33rd Annual Heritage Day Festival
Camp Bethel
October 7
Take part in the Heritage Day Festival at Camp Bethel and spend the day learning about making apple butter, woodworking, quilting, canning, and other activities that celebrate the heritage of the region.

14. Big Lick Train Tug
Virginia Museum of Transportation
October 7
Put your strength to the test as teams will be competing to see who can pull a train the longest distance in an event that will raise money for local charities. There will also be live music, food trucks and kids activities.

15. Boonestoberfest
Hammer & Forge Brewing Company
October 7
Hammer & Forge Brewing Company in Boones Mill is celebrating the fall season with Boonestoberfest - its local take on Oktoberfest where visitors will be able to enjoy craft beer, good food, and live music.

16. Dancing with Dogs
Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech

Bring your leash and your dog for an afternoon of dancing together at the Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech as an instructor will present a collection of simple, pet-friendly dance steps that is sure to impress your family and friends.

17. The California Honeydrops with Jordan Harman Band

The Jefferson Center continues to bring exceptional musical acts to Virginia’s Blue Ridge and this month’s lineup includes a performance by The California Honeydrops with Jordan Harman Band in a night that will showcase Bay Area funk, southern soul, and delta blues.

18. #FBF Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Tribute: The Wildflowers

It’s a #FlashbackFriday party at Dr Pepper Park with the music of The Wildflower, a cover band that specializes in the hits of the legendary Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

19. The LACS “Deplorables Tour”

21. Craftsmen’s Fall Classic Art & Craft Festival

Receive free admission to the festival with a donation to the food bank that supports Feeding America Southwest Virginia.

22. LewisGale Salem Half Marathon, 8k, & Kids Run

23. Big Lick Brewing Company West Station Grand Opening

25. Vinton Fall Festival & 5K Run

Bring the entire family to the Town of Vinton for its annual Fall Festival and 5K run as there will be over 100 craft and food vendors participating, as well as a petting zoo that’s always popular with the kids.

26. SML Oktoberfest & 5K Race/Walk

27. Roanoke Symphony Orchestra: Masterworks Concert

The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra presents the music of Beethoven as part of its Masterworks concert series with a show at the Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech, a beautiful place to see a performance.

28. “Murder Hole” Film Showing

The Salem Museum & Historical Society presents a free showing of Murder Hole, a documentary centered around the infamous Catawba Murder Hole Cave in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

29. Flip FabriQue: Catch Me!

You’ll be amazed at the acrobatics and gravity-defying displays at this show that features performers who’ve also been part of Cirque Du Soleil and Cirque Eloize.

30. Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs Opening Night

34. Fall Colors Sea Kayak Tour

35. Opera Roanoke: Puccini’s Tosca

Now in its 42nd season, Opera Roanoke presents Tosca, a musical thriller that fits perfectly as we head into the Halloween weekend. Get your tickets to see this exciting show at the Jefferson Center.

36. Flat Pickin Fridays: Seven Mile Ford & Mason Creek

It’s your last chance to take part in the Flat Pickin’ Fridays concert series for the year as this month’s event features Seven Mile Ford and Mason Creek. The event will also be fall festival themed and will include costume contests, seasonal beers, and kids activities.

Take a self-guided tour of various local art galleries and studios in Botetourt County and get to know the works of artists, as well as the stories and inspirations behind their most creative pieces.

We don’t need any extra motivation to go see the adorable animals at Mill Mountain Zoo, but it gets even more fun for Zoo Boo, when you can dress up in costume, take the kids trick-or-treating, and enjoy art activities.

40. Demo Day & Outdoor Jamboree

This Demo Day & Outdoor Jamboree at Explore Park will highlight the rich variety of outdoor adventures and activities in the region, while also getting to sample and demo some unique outdoor products.
