There are so many exciting events on the calendar this month in the Roanoke Valley in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

Between music festivals, theater productions, beer festivals, and sports events, you’ll be entertained every day of the month during your next getaway to the mountains.

Here’s a preview of 30 of the biggest events happening in April in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

1. Big Lick for the Love of the Brew

Date: April 1
Location: Berglund Center

This popular craft beer festival in Virginia’s Blue Ridge is back with opportunities to enjoy delicious craft brews from over 20 breweries! Live music will be provided by Corey Hunley & The Millionaires and the Barefoot West Duo, and the Fast Burger Food Truck will be serving food.

2. Southwest Virginia Ballet - “Romeo & Juliet”

Date: April 1-2
Location: Moss Arts Center

The Southwest Virginia Ballet presents the classic William Shakespeare tale of “Romeo & Juliet” with two performances at the beautiful Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech. Artistic director Pedro Szalay uses the power of dance to bring the feud of the Houses of Capulet and Montague and the passionate love story of two young people to life. 

3. 2017 Wedding Crawl

Date: April 2
Location: Roanoke City Market Building

Find all kinds of ideas and inspiration for wedding planning at the annual Wedding Crawl in Downtown Roanoke. Numerous vendors will be on-hand and you can visit local venues to get an idea of the wedding experience you can expect in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

4. Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs Hockey

Date: April 4
Location: Berglund Center

It’s the final home game of the season for the Rail Yard Dawgs! Don’t miss your last chance to cheer on the Dawgs before we enter the offseason and start planning for next year.

5. Salem Red Sox Opening Night

Date: April 6
Location: Haley Toyota Field

Take everyone out to the ballgame! The Salem Red Sox get the season underway with a home opener on Thursday, April 6th and this season is the team’s 50th Anniversary in the Carolina League. The night will also feature a postgame fireworks show.

6. Hollins Theatre Production: “Godspell”

Date: April 6-15
Location: Hollins University

Godspell is a story of friendship, loyalty and love based on the gospel of Matthew in the Bible. The theatre production is based on the book by John-Michael Tebelak and it’s an exciting mix of great music, dance, comedy and drama. 

7. RSO Music of the Beatles

Date: April 7
Location: Salem Civic Center

Enjoy a night of iconic Beatles music presented by the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. It will be a wonderful blend of rock and classical sounds based on many of your favorite Beatles hits, such as Penny Lane, Yesterday and I Am The Walrus.

8. Roanoke Author Invasion

Date: April 8
Location: Holiday Inn Tanglewood

The Roanoke Author Invasion is a celebration of contemporary and paranormal young adult fiction literature. The free event will host nearly 100 authors and provide an afternoon of books, giveaways, and the opportunity to discover new voices and works.

9. Secret Agent 23 Skidoo

Location: Moss Arts Center

A mix of Dr. Seuss and Dr. Dre? Secret Agent 23 Skidoo brings together hip hop with childhood imagination with his unique style and music. It’s a show the entire family, especially the kids, will enjoy.

10. Moonshine Express

Date: April 9
Location: Franklin County

Learn about the fascinating history of making moonshine in Franklin County - known as the Moonshine Capital of the World. This guided tour will include true stories of “likker makin’” and a Gawkers Row of vehicles that were used to haul moonshine. It’s an educational and fun experience of a unique heritage in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

11. SFJAZZ Collective - The Music of Miles Davis & Original Compositions

Date: April 13
Location: Jefferson Center

The SFJAZZ Collective is an ensemble of talented artists who focus creating music each year that honor some of the great musicians in history. This year, the group is highlighting the works of Miles Davis, a world-renowned trumpeter and composer who helped shape the growth of jazz music.

12. Performance in Remembrance

Date: April 14
Location: Moss Arts Center

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the April 16 shooting at Virginia Tech and all are invited to this event at the Moss Arts Center to reflect on the lives lost on that tragic day. The event will include various performances from various campus choir groups and dance ensembles.

13. 19th Annual Blue Ridge Kite Festival

Date: April 15
Location: Green Hill Park

Blue Ridge Kite Festival

Kite flyers of all skill levels can take part in the 19th Annual Blue Ridge Kite Festival at Green Hill Park. The kite-covered sky is a beautiful scene that’s framed by the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains that surround the park.

14. Thomas Jefferson Craft Beer Tasting

Date: April 15
Location: Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest

It’s a chance to sample a variety of craft beers from local breweries and ciders at the gorgeous setting of Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest. There will also be works from local artisans, delicious local food, and live music on the estate’s south lawn.

15. Roanoke Valley Comicon

Date: April 15
Location: Tanglewood Mall

Attendees, dealers, and fans from throughout the East Coast will make their way to Virginia’s Blue Ridge to participate in this year’s Comicon at Tanglewood Mall. You’ll have the opportunity to meet comic creators, dealers with extensive collections, and other comic book enthusiasts.

16. Chris Stapleton

Date: April 20
Location: Berglund Center

Chris Stapleton is one of the hottest names in music, winning Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and New Artist of the Year at the 2015 CMA Awards. He also won two Grammy Awards in 2016 for Best Country Album and Best Country Solo Performance. Stapleton will perform in front of a sold out crowd on April 20 at Berglund Center.

17. Monster Art Rally

Date: April 20
Location: Taubman Museum of Art

The Monster Art Rally is a unique event and fundraiser that offers attendees the opportunity to bid on original works that are created by local artists during the event. It’s a great way to discover the talent of the arts community in Virginia’s Blue Ridge and support their work.

18. Down by Downtown Music Festival

Date: April 20-22
Location: Various Venues in Downtown Roanoke

The Down by Downtown Music Festival will feature three days of incredible live music at various venues in Downtown Roanoke in Virginia’s Blue Ridge. Over 20 musical acts will perform at more than 10 venues, including a free concert on April 21 and the headline show on April 22 in Elmwood Park by LOTUS along with opening acts Broccoli Samurai and Hayley Jane & The Primates. If you enjoy live music, you won’t want to miss this fantastic weekend. 

19. Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon, Half Marathon & Anthem StarK (10K)

Location: Elmwood Park

Whether you’re participating in America’s Toughest Road Marathon or cheering on from the crowd, the Blue Ridge Marathon is one of the most fun annual events in Virginia’s Blue Ridge. The race finish line in Elmwood Park offers a festive atmosphere that’s great for the entire family and it’s always exciting to see runners conquer the challenge of finishing a tough race.

20. Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with Roanoke Symphony Orchestra

Date: April 22
Location: Berglund Center

The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, along with guest choruses, will perform Beethoven’s “Choral” Symphony at Berglund Center. Spend an evening taking in the classical sounds of the symphony & chorus as they present Beethoven’s timeless classic Ode to Joy.

21. Color Run Dream World Tour

Date: April 22
Location: Salem Civic Center

Get ready for a colorful Blue Ridge Day as The Color Run returns to Salem in Virginia’s Blue Ridge as part of its 2017 Tour. This fun run will support the local charity Blue Ridge Autism and Achievement Center and it’s a great way to spend a morning with friends and family participating in an activity that is sure to create many memories and colorful photos.

22. Shine n’ Dine Tasting Event

Date: April 22
Location: Katherine Grace Manor

Spend an evening under the stars at the Katherine Grace Manor in Franklin County for an event that will include moonshine cocktails paired with Southern cuisine and live music. Local flavors will be crafted by Franklin County Distilleries, Center Stage Catering, and Kupkakery Bakery and the setting is in a historic Civil War era mansion. 

23. The Roanoker: 611 Excursions Steam Through Roanoke

Date: April 22-23
Location: Virginia’s Blue Ridge Information Center

N&W Class J611 Steam Locomotive - Virginia Museum of Transportation

Want to see an engineering marvel in action? Don’t miss the iconic N&W Class J611 steam locomotive make its way into Virginia’s Blue Ridge as the Queen of Steam arrives in Roanoke from Greensboro as part of its 2017 excursions. The train, which was built in Roanoke’s East End Shops, is scheduled to arrive on the tracks behind the Virginia’s Blue Ridge Visitor Center in Downtown Roanoke around 12:30 p.m. and depart to return to Greensboro around 3:00 p.m.

24. 62nd Annual Vinton Dogwood Festival

Date: April 26-30
Location: Town of Vinton

The Vinton Dogwood Festival is back for its 62nd year of family fun and entertainment! The five-day festival will include a wide array of activities, including carnival rides, games, concessions, petting zoo, parade, and a 5K run/walk. 

25. Spend the Night with Alice Cooper

Date: April 27
Location: Salem Civic Center

Rock legend Alice Cooper takes over the Salem Civic Center on Thursday, April 27. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the band has produced popular rock music for over 50 years with chart-topping hits like Poison and School’s Out

26. Bike Shorts Film Festival Premiere

Date: April 28
Location: Grandin Theatre

This annual film festival highlights the creativity of local, national and international filmmakers who produce short films centered around bikes and bicycling in unique ways. The festival takes place at the Historic Grandin Theatre and is the perfect way to connect with the great biking community that exists in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

27. Opera Roanoke - “Susannah”

Date: April 28-30
Location: Jefferson Center

The award-winning drama Susannah by Carlisle Floyd is regarded by many as the greatest American opera of the 20th century. Set in the Appalachian Mountains, it’s a story from the Biblical Apocrypha with dramatic power and lyrical beauty that resonates with its audience. 

28. Buchanan Civil War History Weekend

Date: April 28-30
Location: Buchanan Town Park

Civil War History

This weekend full of history activities in the charming Town of Buchanan includes a Civil War re-enactment of Confederate General McCausland and his troops attempting to protect the bridge from Union General David Hunter as part of his raid through the Shenandoah Valley.

29. Historic Garden Week - Roanoke Home & Garden Tour

Location: Various Homes

April 22-29 is Historic Garden Week in Virginia, where gardens, homes and historic landmarks welcome visitors from around the world to see Virginia in its peak spring color. In Virginia’s Blue Ridge, the Roanoke Home & Garden Tour will feature homes with shady gardens and beautiful views of the mountains.

30. Open Studios of Roanoke

Date: April 29-30
Location: Various Homes & Studios

This self-guided tour of local art studios and homes includes over 25 artists from different neighborhoods in Roanoke. The work covers a range of mediums, such as mixed media, sculpting, painting, drawing, photography and more, and you’ll have a chance to visit with the artists to learn more about their work and the inspiration behind it.
