Don’t miss out on a summer vacation in the Roanoke Valley in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains!

The summer season is flying by and, before we know it, the kids will be heading back to school and fall will be on its way.

Make the most of the next month in Virginia’s Blue Ridge by checking out some of these fun events on the calendar for August!

1. Mountain Valley Cluster Dog Show

Date: August 2-6
Location: Salem Civic Center
Find out which dog will be named “Best in Show” at this annual competition hosted by the Roanoke Kennel Club. There will be over 140 different breeds participating, as well as numerous vendors offering a variety of dog treats, supplies, and apparel. Admission is free, so make sure to get lots of pictures with the cute pups!

2. Kiss Me, Kate

Date: Through August 11
Location: Attic Productions
The three-week run of Kiss Me Kate continues into August at Attic Productions. The show is a “play-within-a-play” and is centered around a touring company’s production of Shakespeare’s classic “The Taming of the Shrew.” It’s a fun play for the entire family.

Date: August 3-6
Location: Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech
Cube Fest 2017 is a celebration of art, imagination, and innovation presented by the Institute for Creativity, Arts & Technology. There will be more than 30 international artists offering live performances in The Cube, a four-story, state of the art theatre that creates fully immersive, sensory experiences. 

4. Craig Campbell on the Market

Date: August 4
Location: Salem Farmers Market
Country music artist Craig Campbell will perform in Virginia’s Blue Ridge on August 4 at the Salem Farmers Market on the charming Main Street in Downtown Salem. Campbell is known for hit singles like “Family Man,” “Keep Them Kisses Comin’,” and “Tomorrow Tonight.”

5. Big Lick Comic Con

Date: August 5
Location: Berglund Center
Over two dozen Comic Book vendors, exhibitors, artists, and gamers will participate in the Big Lick Comic Con at Berglund Center! The event will also include guests from The Walking Dead, the hit television show. Put on your best costume and get ready for a great day of gaming, comics and good times.

6. Jimmy Herring and The Invisible Whip

Date: August 5
Location: Jefferson Center
Known primarily for his work as the lead guitarist for Widespread Panic, Jimmy Herring is one of the most talented guitar players in the country. This show at the Jefferson Center will feature Herring’s guitar skills on display with his own band, The Invisible Whip.

7. Salem Red Sox Baseball

Location: Haley Toyota Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark
A night at the ballpark with the Salem Red Sox is a fun and affordable activity for family and friends. Haley Toyota Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark has earned a reputation as one of the best stadiums in minor league baseball and it’s a great chance to see some bright young stars of baseball who will eventually be part of major league rosters.

8. #FBF Van Halen Tribute: Completely Unchained

Date: August 11
Location: Dr. Pepper Park at The Bridges
Dr. Pepper Park at The Bridges continues its #FlashbackFriday series with an exciting show by Completely Unchained, a Van Halen tribute band. You’ll feel like you’re enjoying a concert performed by one of the world’s greatest rock bands and party the night away with many of Van Halen’s most popular hits.

9. Flat Pickin’ Fridays

Date: August 11
Location: Daleville Town Center
Big Lick Entertainment presents its Flat Pickin’ Friday series at Daleville Town Center with live music by Bobby McClendon, as well as an opening set performed by The Floorboards. Admission is only $5 and in addition to the music, there will also be local vendors, children’s activities, and craft beer.

10. Salem After 5

Date: August 11
Location: Salem Farmers Market
It’s the final concert of the year for the popular Salem After 5 music series! Head to the Salem Farmers Market on August 11 for a night of live music and dancing with The Tams. There will also be food vendors on hand and kid-friendly activities.

11. The Addams Family at Showtimers

Date: August 11-27
Location: Showtimers Community Theatre
The Addams Family is the latest production by Showtimers Community Theatre in Virginia’s Blue Ridge. This musical comedy is based on the classic television show and features all your favorite members of The Addams Family, including Morticia and Uncle Fester.

12. Black Dog Beach Music Festival

Date: August 12
Location: Chateau Morrisette
It’s a full Blue Ridge Day of great wine, food, art and live music at Chateau Morrisette’s Black Dog Beach Music Festival. The event will feature Chateau Morrisette’s award-winning wine, as well as live music by Steve Owens & the Summertime Band, Dancing Chicken Band, and The Entertainers.

13. Microfestivus XX

Date: August 12
Location: Downtown Roanoke
It’s the 20th anniversary of Microfestivus! This event has grown to become one of the Mid-Atlantic’s biggest and best craft beer festivals, and this year is scheduled to feature over 180 micro and craft beers from more than 70 breweries around the country. It’s the perfect way to celebrate August being Virginia Craft Beer Month. 

14. Artisan Saturday at Explore Park

Date: August 12
Location: Explore Park
Paintings, jewelry, sculptures, and woodworking are just a few of the unique talents on display at Artisan Saturdays at Explore Park. Located at Milepost 115 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Roanoke County, Explore Park is a great place to stop during your road trip and this unique event highlights the local arts & crafts scene in the region.

15. Makers Market

Date: August 12
Location: Roanoke City Market Building
“Local and handmade goodness” is what you’ll find at the Makers Market in the City Market Building in Downtown Roanoke. The market will feature a selection of artists from Virginia’s Blue Ridge and it’s a fun spot to do some shopping, in addition to the Historic Roanoke City Market in Market Square across the street.

16. Mingle at the Market with Uptown

Date: August 12
Location: Vinton Farmers Market
Let’s party at the Vinton Farmers Market on August 12 with a live performance by Uptown! The show begins at 7:00 p.m. and admission is only $5.00. Note: This is a 21 & older event and ID is required.

17. U.S. Navy Band Bluegrass Concert

Date: August 16
Location: Elmwood Park
Don’t miss out on a free concert in Elmwood Park in Downtown Roanoke on August 16! Country Current is the bluegrass ensemble of the United States Navy Band and the group will present a 75-minute show in the park’s outdoor amphitheater in what promises to be a great night of live music.

18. Party at The Pavilion

Daleville Town Center Pavilion

Date: August 17
Location: Daleville Town Center
Enjoy a beautiful outdoor setting, live music by Fuzzy Logic, and a family-friendly atmosphere at the Party at The Pavilion at Daleville Town Center. The kids will love hanging out in the Kids Zone and there will be food & drink vendors on site.

19. The Legacy Motown Revue

Date: August 18
Location: Jefferson Center
Look forward to the sounds of soul and Motown with this concert by The Legacy Motown Revue at Jefferson Center. The group features a six-piece horn band and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back in time to a golden era of American music.

20. Shakespeare in the Vines

Date: August 18
Location: Virginia Mountain Vineyards
Wine at a beautiful vineyard and a free Shakespeare performance? You bet! Virginia Mountain Vineyards becomes its own fairy wonderland with a production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” performed by a local theatre group in Botetourt County. Wine will also be available for purchase.

21. Cirque du Floyd

Date: August 19
Location: Chantilly Farm Campground
Acrobatics is the theme at the first ever Cirque du Floyd at Chantilly Farm Campground! The day’s festivities will include a performance by a group of New York-based aerial cirque performers, as well as acro-workshops, and an aerial storytelling troupe. It will be a mesmerizing Blue Ridge Day!

22. Festival of India

Date: August 19
Location: Elmwood Park
Experience the rich culture, history, art, music, and diverse flavors of India with the Festival of India in Elmwood Park on August 19. We’re proud to celebrate the Indian population as a rich part of the region’s diverse cultural scene and this event will highlight many unique customs and traditions.

23. Mipso

Date: August 24
Location: Jefferson Center
Mipso brings its distinct Americana style to Virginia’s Blue Ridge as it takes the Jefferson Center stage. The band released its “Coming Down the Mountain” album earlier this year and has drawn praise for its blend of rock, country, gospel and folk sounds.

24. Le Tour de Roanoke: A Foodie Bike Tour

Date: August 24
Location: UnderDog Bikes
This event pairs two favorite activities in Virginia’s Blue Ridge - biking and eating! The guided bike ride will take you to a few of Roanoke’s most popular local restaurants - traveling approximately five miles over 2.5 hours while sampling various appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Don’t wait to reserve your spot!

25. BOCO BBQ & Country Music Festival

Date: August 26
Location: Daleville Town Center
The Bank of Botetourt BOCO BBQ & Country Music Festival is back for its fourth year! Multiple BBQ vendors will be on-hand serving tasty smoked food, and live music will be provided by Jacob Davis and Seven Mile Ford.

26. Green Hill Highland Games

Date: August 26
Location: Green Hill Park
Watch athletes in kilts complete impressive feats of traditional Scottish strength competitions. Who will win the Hammer Throw or the Caber Toss? Head to Green Hill Park in Roanoke County on August 26 to find out!

27. Roanoke Wing Fest

Location: Dr. Pepper Park at The Bridges
Are you ready to chow down on some wings? The annual Roanoke Wing Fest is back for another year of delicious wings, corn hole, and live music at Dr Pepper Park at The Bridges. Sample a variety of wing styles and flavors and decide for yourself as to who makes the best wings in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

28. Art in the Plaza

Date: August 26
Location: Century Plaza
This open-air market in Downtown Roanoke’s Century Plaza will serve as a setting to celebrate and highlight local artists. The market will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Check it out and discover some new local artists!

29. Symphony Under the Stars: At the Movies!

Date: August 26
Location: Elmwood Park
The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra presents a free concert in Elmwood Park with a series of selections from many of your favorite movies. The show will feature works by John Williams, known for iconic scores and music from movies like Jurassic Park, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones.

30. Mill Mountain History Walk

Date: August 27
Location: Mill Mountain Discovery Center
In addition to being home to a zoo, great trails for hiking and biking, and the iconic Roanoke Star, Mill Mountain is also rich with history. Learn about that history by taking part in the Mill Mountain History Walk, which will be hosted by the Mill Mountain Discovery Center on August 27.
