Summer is finally here, and it's a great time to be in the Roanoke Region in Virginia's Blue Ridge! I love taking my standup paddleboard out on the water this time of year. It is a great way to cool down in this summer heat.

Remember, safety first! Always wear a life jacket, especially if you're a beginner, and be mindful of your surroundings.

1. Roanoke River Blueway

If you haven't floated down the Roanoke River, that should be one of the first things on your list. It is an excellent way to beat the summer heat and is right in the heart of the city.

The Roanoke River Floatilla is happening on July 10th at 5:30 pm. You can float down the river with many others on a paddleboard, kayak, or tube. If you need floating equipment, consider renting something ahead of time at Roanoke Mountain Adventures (where the float also begins). The float ends at the Starr Hill Pilot Brewery & Side Stage.

To help with parking and transportation, consider carpooling with friends.

2. Carvins Cove Reservoir

Located only 7 miles from Downtown Roanoke, Carvins Cove Reservoir is also an excellent place to take paddleboards or kayaks. I really enjoy going for a morning mountain bike ride or gravel ride there and then taking my SUP board out in the afternoon. Utilize the boat landing entrance for water access to Carvins Cove.

The Western Virginia Water Authority offers a rental program for single and double kayaks, as well as rowboats and jon boats.

Note: Swimming is prohibited at Carvins Cove.

3. Douthat State Park

Standup Paddleboarding - Douthat State Park

Douthat State Park is one of my favorite places to go to in the region. It is an hour north of Downtown Roanoke, and you can take a scenic ride through Botetourt County to reach the park. Douthat State Park features campgrounds and many mountain bike trails, though the trails are challenging and involve lots of climbing.

With limited cell service, it is an excellent place to unwind. There is a small lake that is peaceful and picturesque, surrounded by mountains. You can take SUP boards or canoes out on the lake, which are also available for rent. There is even a small beach that is great for hanging out and swimming.
