The combination of late fall and holidays make November a great time of year around the Roanoke Valley in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

The start of the month features gorgeous fall colors and fall festivals, and then we transition into all kinds of holiday fun and special events. You can also check out the fall flavors at local breweries and spend time on the amazing trails for outdoor adventures.

2. Layman Family Farms Fall Festival

Pick the perfect pumpkin, go on a hay ride, and race through the corn maze for the ideal fall day at Layman Family Farms.

3. Carvins Cove Mountain Bike Challenge

Mountain bike riders of all ages and skill levels can participate in the inaugural Carvins Cove Mountain Bike Challenge, which will feature three separate courses, special options for first-time racers, and a family team relay.

4. Smith Mountain Lake Fall Chili & Craft Festival
Bridgewater Plaza

It might be cool outside, but things get hot at the Fall Chili & Craft Festival (pictured at the top of this post) at Smith Mountain Lake! This year is the 16th annual event and it’s a full day of delicious chili, arts & crafts, music, and good times at Bridgewater Plaza.

5. Artisan Saturday
Explore Park
November 3
This is one of the best times of year to take a scenic drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and you should certainly include a stop at Explore Park for its Artisan Saturday as part of your road trip. 6. 2 Year Anniversary Party

7. The Black Jacket Symphony Presents Journey

Listen to all your favorite Journey tunes presented in symphonic form by The Black Jacket Symphony. The show begins with a set featuring a particular album showcased as a symphony, and it’s followed by a second set that presents some of the band’s greatest hits.

8. CIAA Volleyball Championship
Salem Civic Center
November 9-10
We are excited to have the 2018 CIAA Volleyball Championship in Salem - Virginia’s Championship City. The top tour teams in the conference will face off in two days of action with the champion advancing on to the NCAA Tournament.

9. Not Another Exquisite Corpse?!
The Spot on Kirk
November 9-11
All ages are welcome for this 3-night production that features local playwrights and actors. The play is presented by Page to Stage Theatre Company and will take place at The Spot on Kirk in Downtown Roanoke.

10. Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs

November 9-10 | November 16, 22, 24 & 30
Cheer on the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs at Berglund Center as the 2018-19 season of the Southern Professional Hockey League is underway! There are multiple opportunities to catch the team in action throughout the month, including for WYYD Country Cares for St. Jude Night on November 10 and Thanksgiving night on November 22.

11. 2018 Tweed Ride
Salem Museum to Olde Salem Brewing

Put on your best tweed attire, roll out the vintage bicycles, and get ready for a fun fall ride through Downtown Salem and along the Roanoke River Greenway for this event organized by RIDE Solutions. There will also be post-ride beers and fun at Olde Salem Brewing Company.

12. Bob Dylan

During his musical career that has spanned more than half a century, Bob Dylan has become one of the most influential figures in American history. His accomplishments include numerous musical awards, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Pulitzer Prize, and Nobel Prize.

Begin your day with tailgating festivities and fun at the Food Lion/Coca Cola Tailgate Cook-Off and then enjoy a great afternoon of action as the CIAA Football Championship takes place at Salem Stadium in Virginia’s Blue Ridge. 

14. Futureman | Silverman
5 Points Music Sanctuary

This concert at the 5 Points Music Sanctuary will feature Roy “Futureman” Wooten - a 5-time Grammy Award winning percussionist, and Tracy Silverman, one of the premier concert electric violinists in the world. 

15. Thomas Jefferson Wine Festival
Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest
November 17
Thomas Jefferson was known as the Father of Virginia Wine, and the 10th annual Wine Festival at his Poplar Forest Estate will feature tastings from more than a dozen of the Commonwealth’s best wineries.

16. Star City Half Marathon & 10K
Downtown Roanoke
November 17
You’ll get a tour of Roanoke as you make your way through the course for the Star City Half Marathon & 10k, which will feature medals for all participants and awards for the top 3 finishers overall, as well as in every age group.

17. Virginia Women’s Conference
The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center
November 17
The Virginia Women’s Conference is an event where women of all ages can meet, network, and hear from experts on topics such as career development, leadership, business, finance, and health. 

18. Beethoven & Shostakovich
Roanoke Symphony Orchestra - Jefferson Center

The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra will present the music of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, and they’ll be joined by Natasha Paremski for its presentation of Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2.

19. Drumstick DASH Family 5K Walk & Run
Downtown Roanoke
November 22
Begin your Thanksgiving Day celebration by taking part in Roanoke’s biggest annual family reunion - the Drumstick DASH! It’s a 5K walk and run where over 13,000 runners and walkers participate in support of the Roanoke Rescue Mission.

24. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer: The Musical

November 29
You see the classic Rudolph stop-motion movie on TV every year during the holiday season, but now you’ll get the opportunity to see the film come to life as everyone’s favorite red-nosed reindeer and his friends come to the Salem Civic Center to help save Christmas!
