Virginia’s Blue Ridge Welcomes
Meetings and Sports Attendees

The region is on track to host nearly 12,000 visitors for conventions and sports events at valley-wide hotels from May through June.   Overall, direct spending of these events is expected to top $3.9 million, generating a sizeable economic impact for the Roanoke Valley.  "Virginia’s Blue Ridge is delighted to host all of these groups," said Landon Howard, Executive Director of the Roanoke Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau.   He added, "Roanoke, Salem and the entire region are enjoying an increased awareness as a destination, which is vital to job creation and future economic development."

In early May, the 2012 NCAA Division III Women’s Softball Championship welcomed 2,800 attendees at Salem’s James I. Moyer Sports Complex.  Also, nearly 1,200 participants from 20 states, Canada and Nova Scotia were on hand for the Grand Chapter of Virginia Order of Eastern Star Annual Meeting, headquartered at the Sheraton Roanoke Hotel and Conference Center.

The month ended harmoniously with the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America’s 2012 Southern Division of the Mid-Atlantic District Convention, May 25-26 at The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center.

The Roanoke Valley Chapter of the International Barbershop Harmony Society was the Host Chapter for the event. Host Chapter Chairman Bill Clark had nothing but praise for the area saying, "Approximately 1,000 barbershop harmony singers, family and friends enjoyed the hospitality and facilities at the hotel and downtown Roanoke. Nothing but "great convention" was heard from those in attendance from throughout Virginia, Washington, DC, parts of Maryland and West Virginia."

This month the Cambria Suites will host the Reunion of the USS BUNCH DE694/APD79, June 6-12; the Roanoke Civic Center and multiple properties will welcome more than 3,000 attendees for the Virginia United Methodist Church Annual Conference, June 22-24; and teams will take to the fields spread around 4 jurisdictions for the ISF Senior World Cup Slow Pitch Championship, June 22-24.
