Fresh on the heals of another successful bow at the Metropolitan Opera, Opera Roanoke principal guest conductor Steven White returns to conduct an all-star cast of the next generation of great Wagner singers.
The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra will be in the pit to bring Wagner's tempest-tossed score to life. Music lovers around the Blue Ridge have the rare opportunity to experience why this dramatic opera changed the landscape of classical music. Wagner's music is among the most influential in history. From popular operas like Carmen, the symphonic works of Mahler and Strauss to the film scores that accompany action movies of all kinds, Wagner's dramatic voice continues to reverberate in this Bicentennial season of his birth.
This new production, designed especially for our home in Shaftman Performance Hall of the Jefferson Center, will bring the story of the infamous ghost ship and her cursed captain vividly to life.
The Flying Dutchman is performed in German with English supertitles.
