After being open for just over six months, the Greenfield Disc Golf Course has been ranked 20th in the world out of over 5000 courses. DG Course Review, a major online community of international disc golf enthusiasts, recently released its annual ranking of the best courses of 2014. The Greenfield course was ranked the best course in Southwest Virginia and one of only two courses in Virginia in the Top 20. The course was built last spring as a part of the County's Recreation Incentive Fund program in collaboration with the Roanoke DiscGolf Club.

"For such a new course, this is truly an honor for the County and a testament to the dedication and support of the Roanoke Disc Golf Club," said Pete Peters, Director of Parks, Recreation & Tourism. "The countless volunteer hours and the support of the County have made the disc golf course the gold standard for community partnerships in the area."

The course features 18 holes in a front and back nine layout similar to a traditional golf course. It provides variations of multiple par 3's, par 4's, and a par 5 as well as multiple sets of tee boxes for both the amateur and the more skilled players. Furthermore, there are ongoing and planned improvements for the course, including player benches at each tee box and concrete pads for the moderate and advanced (white and blue) tees. To help with these improvements, $500 hole sponsorships remain available for businesses or individuals looking to become associated with the course.

"The course's reviews indicate that benches and concrete tee boxes are the top requests by players. With these improvements in place, we hope to break into the Top 10 next year," said Peters.

In addition to public use, the Roanoke Disc Golf Club has selected the Greenfield course as its home course and has planned a number of events there in the coming year.
