Family-friendly Programming at Downtown Museums for Winter Break

Roanoke, Va. (December 17, 2013) - The Science Museum of Western Virginia, the Taubman Museum of Art, and the Virginia Museum of Transportation are pleased to announce winter break programming for families, children, and teachers. From birds and animal presentations at the Science Museum to crafts in Art Venture at the Taubman to a teacher open house at the Transportation Museum, there is plenty to do downtown this holiday season.

Science Museum of Western Virginia: (see below for fees) December 28 at 2pm: Raptors LIVE!
This 45-minute program, inside the Science Museum's planetarium, will feature a live red-tailed hawk, peregrine falcon, barn owl, and kestrel. Educator Corey Basham will talk about raptor species and demonstrate some fancy flying. Reservations are required. Sponsored by Origami Owl Custom Jewelry designer Beth Bell, Raptors LIVE! is free for Science Museum members. Non-member rate, which includes admission to exhibit floor: $11.50/adult, $11/senior, $10/youth (6-17) $8.25/child (2-6).


January 4, 12014: Animal Tales
This new monthly program features a story, a live animal presentation, and a take-home craft, designed to inspire preschoolers. Thanks to our corporate sponsors: Firefly Fare, located in Roanoke City Market, and Growing Up in the Valley. Animal Tales is free for Science Museum members, and included in the regular museum admission for non-members. Limited to 25 children; please reserve at 540.342.5768 or svanzele@smwv.org.
