The Roanoke Chapter, National Railway HistoricalSociety announces Fall Foliage Amtrak excursions from Roanoke!On the weekend of November 5 and 6, riders have the chance to ride the rails in our area again. In cooperation with Amtrak and Norfolk Southern, we will operate two round-trip excursions.On Saturday, November 5, 2011, we will be headed out to one of our most popular destinations ever; Abingdon, Virginia. Our excursion train will depart the former N&W passenger station and climb Christiansburg Mountain then across the scenic highlands via Radford, Pulaski, Rural Retreat and Wytheville before arrival in Abingdon. There are lots of options on arrival including lunch at one of several restaurants, perhaps a visit to the local art gallery in the former station or even a visit to the famed Barter Theatre. The train will operate on to Bristol before returning, riders have the optionof staying onboard for the additional ride.On Sunday, November 6, 2011, this time we are bound for Bluefield, West Virginia, climbing ChristiansburgMountain, rolling along the New River Valley then climbing the grade into Bluefield. After a layover of several hours to experience the local sights, sounds and food, passengers will board the train to return to Roanoke.
