Some of the best hiking, camping and back-country experiences around are available on the Appalachian Trail, located in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. It is the nation's longest marked footpath, at approximately 2,181 miles, the first completed national scenic trail, designated in 1968. It crosses six other units of the national park system, Traverses eight national forests, Touches 14 states. It also houses more than 2,000 occurrences of rare, threatened, endangered and sensitive plant and animal species at about 535 sites.

  • Directions: The Appalachian Trail comes from the east and crosses over I-81 just north of Roanoke in Botetourt County. The trail continues north and runs parallel to the Blue Ridge Parkway into the Shenandoah Valley.

  • Additional Information: With a length of approximately 2,180 miles, the Appalachian Trail is one of the longest continuously marked footpaths in the world. Virginia has more miles of the trail (550 miles) than any other state. It is estimated roughly 2-3 million people visit the "A.T." every year.
